ChatGPT alternatives

Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Perplexity each beat it at something. Which one wins depends on whether you want reasoning, live sources, or a free tier that doesn’t cap you.

02 Adobe Photoshop logo above a stack of alternative tool cards

Photoshop alternatives

One-time-purchase and free editors that handle layers, masks and RAW without the Creative Cloud subscription. Two of our picks are genuinely professional-grade.

Top 5 comparisons

Same prompts, same day, same hardware. We run both tools on identical tasks and publish the raw outputs — not a feature table copied from their pricing pages.

Writing craft and careful reasoning against raw context size and Workspace integration. A clear split by use case rather than an overall winner.

Pick by job, not by brand

The best AI tool for the thing you’re doing

You don’t need “the best AI tool.” You need the best one for this task, at your budget, today. Start with the job.

Best AI image generators

Photoreal, illustration and product mockups have three different winners. Free tiers compared on real output limits, not marketing claims.

Best AI video generators

Text-to-video, avatar presenters and clip editing are separate categories. We split them so you don’t buy the wrong subscription.

Best AI image-to-video

Turning a still into motion is where most tools fall apart. Rated on artefacts, clip length and what each one actually costs per second.

Best AI chatbots

General assistants ranked on reasoning, speed, refusal rate and what you actually get without paying. Updated as new models ship.

Best AI photo editors

Retouching, background removal and upscaling tested on the same set of difficult photos — including hair, glass and low light.

How we test
01 What is the best free alternative to ChatGPT?

DeepSeek and Google Gemini are the two strongest free ChatGPT alternatives in 2026. DeepSeek offers unlimited free chat with reasoning close to paid models, and Gemini gives a generous free tier plus native access to Google Docs, Drive and Gmail. If you need cited sources rather than conversation, Perplexity’s free plan is the better swap. All of them are compared in full on our ChatGPT alternatives guide.

02 How do you decide which AI tool is “best”?

We run every tool on the same task set, on the same day, and score the output — not the feature list. An image model gets identical prompts across photoreal, illustration and product categories; a video tool is judged on artefacts and cost per second; a writing tool is scored on how much editing the draft still needs. Pricing is re-checked every seven days because AI vendors change plans constantly. We take no payment for placement, and no affiliate deal changes a ranking — see our editorial standards.

03 Is a cheaper AI tool actually worse?

Usually not — price mostly tracks distribution and funding, not quality. In our testing the free tier of a challenger model matched or beat a $20/month incumbent on roughly half of everyday tasks: summarising, drafting, translation, code explanation. Paid tools pull ahead on long-context reasoning, reliability under load, and integrations. The practical rule: pay for the one tool you use daily, and use free alternatives for everything occasional.

04 What should I check before switching AI tools?

Four things: data export, real usage limits, privacy terms, and whether your existing integrations survive the move. Export first — some tools make your history hard to retrieve later. Then read the actual rate limits, since “unlimited” often means unlimited at reduced speed. Check whether your inputs train the vendor’s models and whether you can opt out. Finally, list the integrations you rely on; a cheaper tool that breaks your automation is not cheaper.

05 Which AI tool is best for generating images?

Midjourney still leads on photoreal output, but it is no longer the automatic choice. For illustration and brand-consistent work, other models follow prompts more literally and cost less per image; for quick social assets, a design tool with a built-in generator saves more time than a better model would. Our best AI image generator comparison splits the picks by exactly this: what you’re making, not which model scores highest overall.

06 Are AI tool comparison sites trustworthy?

Many are not — most rank by affiliate commission, and the “top pick” is simply the highest payout. Look for three signals before you trust any comparison: does the site publish its testing method, does it show raw outputs you can judge yourself, and does it disclose commercial relationships in plain language? We publish all three. Where we earn a commission it is disclosed on the page, and it never changes the order of a list.

07 How often is this pricing data updated?

Pricing is verified every seven days; rankings are re-tested whenever a major model version ships. AI pricing moves faster than any other software category — free tiers appear and vanish within weeks. Every tool page carries a visible “last verified” date so you can see exactly how current the figure is before you rely on it.

08 Can I find an alternative to a tool that isn’t listed?

Yes — search the tool name in the bar at the top of this page. If we have a guide for it you’ll get the alternatives shortlist instantly. If we don’t yet, you can submit the tool and we prioritise the review queue by how many people request it.
